EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
