The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
