Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
